Norsin Festus has been a lot of things. Soldier, slave, horse trainer, prisoner, and general pain in the ass are somewhere around the top of the list. However, he's got a lot of useful skills, even when you live in a shit world that's been conquered by people determined to turn you and your fellow Evendarians into slaves. Even without letting on to the enemy how good he is at general mayhem, Festus is generally too useful to kill, even when he's annoying.

But what he really sucks at is keeping his head down and staying out of trouble. So when he hears that some too-brave-for-his-own-good idiot is out taking the war to the Olorians...well, he's just got to see what this Night Rider business is all about, doesn't he?

And when he learns he's got to take a different name, Risk sounds just about right.

The First Ride is a short story prequel to Night Rider, set in some of the darkest days of the Legacy.
